news, musings, and other stuff

Hello 3 months!

Griffin celebrated his almost 3 months in a way that made his daddy and mommy very proud: He attended his very first Jimmy Buffett tailgate party! Griffin was truly a little Parakeet in his Hawaiian shirt (courtesy of the Westbrooks, longtime Evans family friends) and lei (thank you, Aunt Lindsay!). He also enjoyed being passed around to his various “aunties” and “uncles.” Scott was particularly happy to have Griffin at Buffett. As Jimmy B. gets closer to retiring we always wonder if this year will be the last show in Dallas. Scott was so thrilled that his son got to experience the Buffett festivities. If Buffett does come back next year, it may be a little more challenging since Griffin will be up and running all over the place!

Buffett also brought a visit from one of my dearest friends, Elle! We were so happy to have Auntie Elle stay with us. Griffin expressed this by throwing up all over her–his ultimate expression of affection. 🙂

At 3 months, Griffin has discovered his hands. They seem to fascinate him. I think he realizes that he can control them too. The other day, as he was laying in his gymini, I swear I caught him batting at one of the dangling toys! He did it several times and I wonder if it was intentional or just a coincidence. He continues to get longer and longer. He seems to really love it when he’s lying down and we talk to him. When we do that he just laughs and talks back and laughs and laughs. He’s a character, that little guy of mine.

Two months already?

I'm two months old!

I'm two months old!

Griffin had his 2 month checkup on March 25th. I still can’t believe he’s in the world! About a year ago we had just finished another visit to Europe and were getting ready for the Jimmy Buffett concert. This year we have a beautiful baby boy! I never knew it was possible to have so many moments so wondrous and joyous that they all blur together.

At his checkup Griffin weighed in at 11.6 ounces, was 23 1/2 inches long, and had a head that was 15.3 inches roundish. =) He did very well on his physical exam and the doctor said he’s growing very nicely. He has a little bit of eczema on his elbows but our doc wasn’t terribly worried. I think he gets the eczema from Daddy but you didn’t hear that from me.

Griff is mostly sleeping through the night now. We can usually lay him down at about 10pm or so and he’ll sleep until about 7:30am. Of course, right after I tell people this he usually has a night when it seems as if he’ll never settle down so I should probably quit jinxing myself. =)

It’s hard to predict when he’ll decide to wake up before 7:30 am which is making it hard for me to settle into a solid pumping schedule. If he goes to bed early enough, I usually wake up at about 5am and pump for 10 minutes on one side and 5 minutes on the other. The past two days I’ve been able to get about 5 ounces which I think is pretty good. His morning schedule is still pretty unpredictable so my best bet of pumping is that early morning time. I’m hoping that what I pump is enough to work with when I first start back.

Our little boy has the most infectious smile! I love it when he giggles and laughs and grins. Every time he lights up I can’t help but crack up. He is such a character!

These last two months have been so unbelievable. I’m loving every minute of it!

Check up time again

Whoa boy! I'm that big already?

Whoa boy! I'm that big already?

Griffin’s 4 week check-up was today. His current stats are:

Weight: 9.6 pounds (50th percentile)

Height: 22 inches (75th percentile)

Head: 14.5 inches (25th percentile)

The doctor said that everything was looking great. Once again our boy got an A+ for his physical exam and an A+ for development.

We’re going to start integrating the bottle sometime this week. That means we’ll get to try the whole pumping thing.

Griffin has also started sleeping for longer stretches in the evening. We’ve been putting him down at about 10pm or so. He usually doesn’t wake up until about 3:40 or 4:30 in the morning!

All smiles

Right before tonight’s bath we caught Griffin smiling! I was taking care of some last minute preparations when Scott called me into the bathroom. He was asking Griffin if he wanted to take a bath when the little guy gave him a big smile. He must have been excited about bathtime because whenever Scott asked him about it, he was all grins.

It was TOO ADORABLE! Scott says he has a dimple but I was too thrilled to even think about looking for it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to grab the camera but I know there will be many more smiles in the future so I’m not worried. I’m a proud, proud momma. 🙂

Two weeks already?

Griffin one week

Griffin one week

Griffin was two weeks old yesterday! I can’t believe it. In some ways it seems as if the time has gone by so quickly in other ways it seems like it’s been so much longer since we brought him home.

At his two week checkup our doctor was very pleased. Griffin currently weighs 7.5 ounces and is 20.8 inches long. He is in the 75-90th percentile for height. What a long kiddo! He got A+s on his physical exam and motor development skills as well. We are so happy!

Scott went back to work this week so it’s just been Griffy, the dogs, and me at home. I’m doing a lot better than I thought I would. It helps that G is still sleeping a lot. I’ve become a faster eater as I try to scarf something down while he is napping. It looks like my days of leisurely eating while reading a book are over.

We are getting the hang of breastfeeding as well. It’s not nearly as frustrating as it used to be. Sometimes it takes us a little longer to get a better latch than others but it doesn’t hurt nearly as much as it used to. Nighttime feedings are probably the hardest because he’s not the only one who’s falling asleep during the feeding! We’ve found that it’s better if I feed him for as long as possible so that he doesn’t start fussing the minute he gets put back in the bassinet. Scott and I have a system that seems to be working. When G starts fussing, Daddy gets up, changes him, and hands him to me. When G is done eating, Daddy puts him back to bed. It’s a lot of waking up for Scott, but since he falls back asleep as soon as he hits the pillow every single time, he’s okay with it. Whenever I tried to get up to put G back to bed, I’d jostle him and he’s wake up and we would have to start all over again.

At one point when I was holding Griffin today he just seemed so much bigger to me! Not his weight per se, but his features. Maybe it was just because I was looking at some pictures of him and he looked so small but at that moment it definitely seemed like he was doing some growing. I’m happy but sad at the same time. Sometimes when I’m holding him I think about how he’ll be too big to cuddle on my chest someday. At the same time, I can’t wait to see him change and grow. Sigh. Parenthood is so conflicting. 🙂
